Complications Auditions

When should I audition?

Our Foundations class delivers a lot of content, and is designed to solidify the most important patterns and concepts of the dance. Therefore we would generally encourage everyone to complete all four Foundation class blocks at least once, if not multiple times. That being said, everyone’s journey is different, so when to first audition is up to you. Previous dance background, or private lessons, may mean that you are ready for additional challenges before completing all Foundations content.

Also note that by taking the audition you will receive personalized feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement, so there is value beyond qualifying, or not, for Complications.

How is the audition run?

There are two sections to the audition, a solo section, and a section danced with an instructor. Each section will be video taped, and results (along with the video) will be sent to the student once reviewed by the RSC Head Instructor.

Solo

The solo section of the audition is designed to ensure that each student is independently capable of recognizing and executing all basic patterns. For the audition, music will be played and the following patterns will be called in any order:

Sugar Push
Left Side Pass
Sugar Tuck
Under Arm Turn
Whip

Here is an example video of the solo section of the audition. If you wish to practice beforehand, use this audition track.

With Instructor

Dancing with an instructor allows for a deeper assessment of all aspects of the dance including timing, balance, clarity, and connection. For the audition, music will be played and the following patterns will be called in any order:

Sugar Push
Left Side Pass
Sugar Tuck
Under Arm Turn
Whip
Inside Roll (not in solo section)

Here is an example video of the solo section of the audition. If you wish to practice beforehand, use this audition track.

How are results determined?
